Health, Safety and Environment

Safety is our First Priority

CablesOne has a long-standing HSE commitment to the highest standards for the health and safety of our employees, clients, customers, contractors and visitors as well as to the protection of the environment in the communities in which we live and work.

Our Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Management System is an essential part of the way we do business. It is modeled after ISO 14001 standards which means that CablesOne is accountable for all HSE policies. This in turn ensures rigorous HSE standards throughout the company. The CablesOne HSE Management System defines the principles by which we conduct our operations locally in Brunei Darussalam and regionally.

Sharing Best Practices

CablesOne commits itself to share best practices through HSE Technical Papers and strongly believes in educating employees with respect to Health, Safety and the Environment. Companies in Brunei are required to have an HSE officer by law and as a result, there is an ever-present demand for well-qualified HSE officers, which is likely to ‘stay and increase’.

CablesOne encourages interested employees to sit for the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) qualification. There is a real demand for safety officers who hold a NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC).

The new NEBOSH Environmental Awareness at Work qualification introduces employees to environmental issues and the role they play in improving organizational environmental performance. This introductory qualification is aimed at anyone who needs a basic understanding of environmental issues in the workplace. It provides a general awareness of environmental issues and can be taken by employees at all levels within the Company. Topics covered include, but are not limited to: waste management, environmental management systems, sustainable development and impact risk assessments.

Policy Statement, standards, and accountability

It is the responsibility of Management to apply all HSE policies rigorously throughout the company. CablesOne captures its own performance data using an online software system. This performance data is consolidated so that various reports can be generated. The CablesOne system is accessible by all employees and monitors the reporting of HSE events. Risk reports are produced which facilitate investigations and audits. The software system also tracks HSE training and facilitates a wide range of HSE reports and data analysis.

CablesOne actively follows the two fundamental principles of Health and Safety as mandated by ISO 14001 standards, which are Compliance and Intervention. Compliance means that we stick to the rules and policies that we have set out no matter what and Intervention means that anytime we see something unsafe then we stop it from happening.

Waste Management of Fiber Optic Cables:

For proper fiber optic waste management, firstly the pickup operation. Our trained technicians should make generous use of masking tape (or any other type of tape) to catch the waste fiber pieces. Once the pickup operation is complete, it is needed to fold the tape upon itself and carefully dispose it. Never leave this tape lying around. Remember fibers are insidious, since they are very difficult to see; especially when we’re not expecting them. Our proper fiber terminations tools are equipped with fiber disposal trays for catching the bits of fibers upon cutting it. This makes the waste disposal of the fibers easier and faster, thus preventing injuries of fibers getting into our skin! Fiber corrugated steel jacket, fiber loose tube and any armored metal inside fiber jacket are also required to dispose in proper place as it may caused any injuries to others if its improper dispose.

Environmental management systems:

Our trained HSE Supervisors on site workplace are always aware of proper signage and safety barricade of workplace. This is to create a safety environment for all our customers to avoid if, or prevent any accident from happening at our project site workplace. We will ensure our staffs are equipped with full PPE, safety helmet, safety hand gloves, safety boots and safety goggles every time they are on site.

Sustainable Development:

CablesOne implementations of optical fiber cables are typically have longer infrastructure lifespan, which supports a sustainable installation. The inherently high bandwidth in optical fiber means that once the cable is installed, it has a potential working life of 25-plus years without replacing of the new cables, thereby providing network managers a migration strategy that minimizes materials consumption and maximizes support for emerging topologies. The longer usable lifespan also reduces the total cost of ownership for the structured cabling part of the network. Finally, it also means that fewer cables need to be discarded because of obsolescence and cater for future generation network.

Risk Assessments.

Our HSE Supervisors are always aware of risk during the cables implementation. It is a habit to conduct a survey on the project site and identify the risk assessment before starting any work. Therefore all related safety risks are being accessed is being documented and submit to customer relevant HSE department for assessment. Our trained staffs are experienced in handling fiber with care. It is to be remembered, “When fiber optic cables are open then the hazards arise”. Therefore with proper risk assessment procedures, our HSE officers are always ensure this accident will not happen in our work place.
